COMPOSITIONS

Bandiera doppia

Violin solo. Duration: 1m 30s. Commissioned by Vincenzo Gatto. Published by LANTRO music, 2005.

A short, pleasant encore, especially written for the young and talented violinist Lorenzo Gatto. Mixing both anthems of Belgium and Italy. Just for the fun of it!

MARTa-Variationen

Piano solo. Duration: 40m. Created on december 16, 2005 by Yu-Fen Chang at the MARTa museum, Herford, Germany. Commissioned by the MARTa museum. Published by LANTRO music, 20051173.

This work, ordered by the MARTa museum in Herford, is a challenge and, at the same time, a pamphlet. A challenge, as I was requested to write an approximately 40 min long piece for the piano solo, which is a rather unusual length; a pamphlet, as I was expected to respond to the intellectual comfort of the array of pianists who populate all the concert halls of the world and shower us with their inevitable Chopin preludes, Brahms intermezzos or complete Beethoven sonatas.

Until the second half of the 19th century the music called “classical” or “serious” was always contemporary, that is to say one performed virtually solely the pieces created at one’s time. Unfortunately, this beautiful and wholesome mechanism jammed, which was a direct consequence of the increasingly pronounced stardom of concert soloists. This resulted in a serious dichotomy between the public doomed to the stupor by performers deprived of the progressive spirit and creators seeking the New Beauty. I personally dream of a world where the current proportions were purely and simply inverse: 5% of the pretty antiquities and 95% of the music of our times, at any rate less than 25 years old.

The “MARTa-Variationen” are a little like a catalogue of music that I would rather not hear on stage anymore. I hope that this drop will be the one to overflow the vase of the obsolete swoon. Nevertheless, I offer all my excuses to Mr Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt, Schumann, Brahms, Chopin, Scriabine, Mahler, Tchaïkowsky, Kalkbrenner, Strauss and many others whom I used as models while writing these pages of music: they are not responsible for the drifts of the 20th century which they did not know or hardly knew and which are still poisoning us at the dawn of the 20th century.
